Fire Assay Flux

Fluxes can convert infusible compounds at a certain temperature into other compounds that melt at that temperature, playing a crucial role in the fire assay process.

Fire assay is a traditional and highly accurate method for analyzing precious metals in ores and concentrates. The flux is a key component, combining with mineral samples containing precious metals and heating in a furnace to form a lead (Pb) button. Further processing of this button through the process of cupellation produces a prill containing the precious metals present in the original sample.

Soda ash (sodium carbonate): A powerful basic assay flux that helps desulfurize the sample and lowers the melting temperature of the mixture by forming a eutectic.
